Sea Freight Forwarder Australia
Home Freight Forwarder Sea Freight
Most cargo moving into and out of Australia travels by sea. It’s slower than air freight, yes. But for anything heavy, bulky, or not time-critical, ocean freight makes economic sense.
TSL Australia is an experienced sea freight forwarder that has coordinated sea freight services for over 25 years. We handle full container loads, less than container loads (LCL), breakbulk cargo, and project shipments. From booking vessel space to customs clearance to final delivery – our freight forwarding service manages the entire supply chain.
Here’s what you need to know about sea freight shipping in Australia.
What a Sea Freight Forwarder Does
Sea freight forwarders don’t own ships. As a freight forwarder Australia business, we book cargo space with shipping lines, handle documentation, coordinate customs clearance, and manage logistics throughout your supply chain at origin and destination ports.
The value is in coordination. Ocean freight involves multiple parties: trucking companies, shipping lines, port terminals, quarantine inspectors, delivery agents. Our sea freight shipping services manage all of them so your freight cargo moves smoothly from supplier to warehouse with seamless international shipping.
As an established freight company with global logistics capabilities, TSL works with all major shipping lines serving Australia – Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Cosco, ONE, Yang Ming, Hapag-Lloyd. This range of services gives you access to multiple sailing options, freight solutions for international trade, and competitive freight service rates.

Full Container Load (FCL) vs Less Than Container Load (LCL)
You have two main options for sea freight services: book a full container load or share space with other shippers via less than container load (LCL).
Full Container Load (FCL)
FCL means you’re hiring a complete shipping container. Your goods travel alone with no other cargo mixed in. This container shipping method offers complete control over your freight cargo.
Standard container sizes:
- 20-foot container: Holds approximately 28 cubic metres, maximum payload around 21,000kg
- 40-foot container: Holds approximately 58 cubic metres, maximum payload around 27,000kg
- 40-foot high cube: Extra height (2.9m vs 2.4m), holds approximately 68 cubic metres
FCL makes sense when you’re shipping larger volumes. The exact crossover point depends on your cargo dimensions and the specific route, but generally if you’re filling more than half a container, FCL becomes more economical than LCL.
FCL offers faster transit because there’s no consolidation or deconsolidation time at ports. Your shipping container goes straight from factory to vessel to destination. Less handling also means lower damage risk.
Less Than Container Load (LCL)
LCL means your cargo shares container space with other businesses’ shipments. Your goods get consolidated with others at the origin port, shipped together, then separated out at destination.
LCL suits smaller shipments or when you’re testing a new product or supplier before committing to full container load volumes. You only pay for the space you use, measured in cubic metres.
The trade-off is time. Consolidation and deconsolidation add 3-7 days to your total transit time. There’s also slightly higher damage risk from the extra handling.
Major Sea Freight Routes to Australia
Australia’s main container ports handle cargo from around the world.
From Asia
China, Southeast Asia, India – these international sea freight routes see the most frequent sailings. Our sea freight forwarder services from Shanghai to Melbourne run 14-18 days. Ningbo to Sydney takes 12-16 days. Singapore to Brisbane is 10-14 days.
Multiple shipping lines operate these routes with weekly sailings. You’re rarely waiting more than a few days for the next available vessel.
From Europe
European cargo typically routes through Asian hub ports (Singapore, Port Klang, Colombo) or comes direct via the Suez Canal. Our international sea freight services achieve transit times of 35-45 days from major European ports to Australian capitals.
From North America
West Coast USA (Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland) to Australia runs 18-25 days with our freight service. East Coast USA and Gulf ports route through Panama Canal, taking 30-40 days.
Coastal Shipping Within Australia
We also coordinate coastal shipping between Australian ports. Melbourne to Perth, Sydney to Brisbane, Adelaide to Darwin – when you’re moving cargo between Australian cities, coastal shipping offers a cost-effective alternative to road or rail.
Coastal shipping suits heavy or bulky goods, full container loads, or regular shipments between cities. Mining equipment, construction materials, retail stock – we handle it regularly.

How Sea Freight Pricing Works
Sea freight rates are quoted per container (for FCL) or per cubic metre (for LCL).
FCL rates fluctuate based on supply and demand. Peak season (August to November) sees higher rates as retailers stock up for Christmas. Chinese New Year (late January or February) can create capacity shortages as factories rush to ship before the holiday shutdown.
Beyond the base ocean freight rate, expect charges for:
- Origin port handling and documentation
- Destination port charges and container handling
- Customs clearance and quarantine inspections
- Delivery from port to your warehouse
- Detention and demurrage (if you hold containers beyond free time)
We provide complete door-to-door quotes so you know your total landed cost upfront. No surprises when your cargo arrives.
Transit Times and Schedules
Ocean freight is slower than air, but it’s predictable. Shipping lines publish schedules weeks in advance. You know when your cargo will sail and when it’s expected to arrive.
That said, delays happen. Port congestion, bad weather, vessel breakdowns, missed connections at transhipment ports – these can add days to your transit time. Peak season sees more delays as ports get congested.
We track your shipment throughout transit and alert you to any delays or issues. When your cargo arrives, we’re ready with customs documentation to clear it quickly.

Customs Clearance for Sea Freight
Every commercial sea freight shipment requires customs clearance before release from the port. Our broker team prepares your import entry, calculate duties and GST, and coordinate with the Australian Border Force and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
As an experienced freight forwarder Australia company, we lodge import entries electronically and track your shipment through customs to ensure smooth clearance. We handle both import and export documentation across Australia and New Zealand.
Required Documentation
You’ll need:
- Commercial invoice (with HS codes, values, Incoterms)
- Bill of lading
- Packing list
- Certificates of origin (if claiming FTA duty reductions)
- Import permits (for restricted goods)
- Fumigation or treatment certificates (if required for biosecurity)
Get these documents right before shipping. Missing or incorrect paperwork means delays – and when your cargo is sitting at the port, you’re paying storage charges.
Biosecurity Requirements
DAFF takes biosecurity seriously. Certain goods require permits, treatment, or inspection before entering Australia.
High-risk categories include:
- Food and agricultural products
- Timber and wood products
- Plant-based materials
- Goods packed in wooden crates or pallets
- Used machinery or vehicles
Check BICON (Biosecurity Import Conditions system) before shipping. During BMSB season (September to April), specific goods from target countries require mandatory treatment.
We advise on biosecurity requirements before you ship and coordinate any required inspections or treatments.
Import Duties and Taxes
Two costs hit when goods clear customs: GST and duty.
GST is 10% on most imports, calculated on customs value plus any duty. Customs duty rates vary by product category, determined by your HS code classification.
Many goods from China, Thailand, Japan, Korea, and other FTA partners attract reduced or zero duty rates if you have the correct certificate of origin. We ensure you claim these savings on your customs entry.
Getting the HS code right matters. Incorrect classification can mean overpaying duty or facing penalties for underpayment. Our brokers verify classifications before lodging your entry.
Container Detention and Demurrage
When your FCL shipment arrives, you get a limited number of free days to unpack the container and return it empty to the shipping line’s depot. This free time varies by shipping line and port, typically 3-5 days.
Hold the container beyond free time and you’re paying detention charges – often $50-100 per day, increasing after the first week.
Demurrage is similar but applies to cargo sitting at the port terminal before you collect it. Free time is usually shorter, around 3 days.
These charges add up fast. We coordinate delivery timing to avoid unnecessary detention and demurrage costs.
Out-of-Gauge and Breakbulk Cargo
Not everything fits in a standard container. Oversized machinery, long steel beams, large vehicles, industrial equipment – these require special handling.
Options include:
- Flat rack containers: Open sides for wide cargo
- Open top containers: For tall cargo that won’t fit through standard doors
- Breakbulk shipping: Cargo loaded directly onto the vessel without containers
TSL coordinates out-of-gauge and breakbulk shipments regularly. We arrange the appropriate equipment, handle special loading requirements, and coordinate delivery with the right trucks and permits for oversized loads.
Project Cargo and Heavy Lift
Large-scale projects – mining installations, construction equipment, industrial plants – require specialised logistics. Multiple shipments, complex coordination, heavy lift equipment, site delivery.
We’ve coordinated project cargo for mining operations, construction sites, and industrial facilities across Australia. This includes:
- Multi-shipment coordination and scheduling
- Heavy lift equipment and cranes
- Route surveys and transport permits for oversized loads
- On-site delivery and positioning
- Storage and staging if needed
Project cargo requires experience. We’ve been doing this for 25 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does sea freight take from China to Australia?
Typical transit times from major Chinese ports:
- Shanghai to Melbourne: 14-18 days
- Ningbo to Sydney: 12-16 days
- Shenzhen to Brisbane: 10-14 days
Add 3-5 days for customs clearance and delivery to your warehouse. LCL shipments add another 3-7 days for consolidation and deconsolidation.
What’s the difference between FCL and LCL?
FCL (Full Container Load) means you hire an entire container. LCL (Less than Container Load) means you share space with other shippers. FCL is faster and has less handling, but LCL is more economical for smaller shipments. The crossover point is typically when you’re filling more than half a container.
How much does it cost to ship a container from China to Australia?
Rates fluctuate based on supply and demand. As a rough guide, expect $1,500-3,500 for a 20-foot container and $2,000-4,500 for a 40-foot container from major Chinese ports to Australian capitals. Peak season (August-November) sees higher rates. Contact us for current pricing.
Do you handle customs clearance for sea freight?
Yes, our brokers prepare import entries, calculate duties and GST, coordinate with the Australian Border Force and DAFF, and ensure you claim any FTA duty reductions you’re entitled to.
What happens if my cargo is delayed?
We track your shipment throughout transit and alert you to any delays. If your cargo is delayed, we’ll advise on the revised arrival date and adjust our customs clearance timing accordingly. Most delays are caused by port congestion, bad weather, or missed transhipment connections.
Do you offer warehousing and storage?
We can coordinate warehousing if you need to store cargo before delivery. This is common when you’re importing large volumes but need to distribute smaller quantities over time, or when your warehouse isn’t ready to receive cargo immediately.
What are detention and demurrage charges?
Detention is charged when you hold a container beyond the free time allowed (typically 3-5 days). Demurrage is charged when cargo sits at the port terminal beyond free time. Both can cost $50-100+ per day. We coordinate delivery timing to help you avoid these charges.
