Air Freight Forwarder Australia

Air Freight Forwarder Australia

Home Freight Forwarder Air Freight

When your cargo needs to move fast, air freight is the answer. TSL Australia has coordinated air freight for over 25 years – from urgent production parts to high-value electronics.

We handle the booking, documentation, customs clearance, and delivery. You get one point of contact and real-time tracking from pickup to final destination.

Here’s what you need to know about air freight in Australia.

What an Air Freight Forwarder Actually Does

We don’t own aircraft. We book cargo space with airlines, handle the paperwork, coordinate customs clearance, and manage logistics at both ends.

Think of it this way: airlines move cargo between airports. We handle everything before and after – pickup from your warehouse, documentation, customs entries, delivery to your customer’s door.

The value is in the coordination. Air freight involves multiple parties: trucking companies, airlines, quarantine inspectors, delivery agents. We manage all of them so you don’t have to.

TSL holds an Australian Trusted Trader accreditation, which speeds up customs processing for your air freight shipments. That matters when you’re paying premium rates for speed.

When Air Freight Makes Sense

Air freight costs more per kilo than sea freight. A lot more. But in certain situations, it’s worth every dollar.

Speed Requirements

Transit times from major Asian hubs to Australia run 2-5 days for air freight versus 14-30 days by sea. When you’re restocking a fast seller, meeting a product launch deadline, or shipping urgent replacement parts, those extra weeks matter.

We’ve cleared air freight through Sydney and Melbourne within 24 hours of landing. That’s pickup in Shanghai on Monday, cleared and delivered in Australia by Thursday.

High-Value, Low-Weight Goods

Electronics, medical devices, precision instruments, fashion items – these products often make sense for air freight. The faster transit means less time with inventory tied up in shipping. Tighter security at airports reduces theft risk compared to sea freight.

Calculate the carrying cost of your inventory. Sometimes paying more for freight saves money overall.

How Air Freight Pricing Works

Air freight rates are quoted per kilogram, but there’s a catch: airlines charge based on whichever is higher – actual weight or volumetric weight.

Volumetric weight is calculated by multiplying length × width × height (in centimetres) and dividing by 6,000. Light but bulky items – furniture, packaging materials, sporting goods – often get charged on volumetric weight rather than actual weight.

A 10kg carton measuring 80cm × 60cm × 60cm has a volumetric weight of 48kg. You’re paying for 48kg, not 10kg.

Beyond the base freight rate, expect charges for:

  • Fuel surcharges (fluctuate with oil prices)
  • Security screening fees
  • Pickup and delivery
  • Customs clearance and documentation
  • After-hours or weekend processing (if needed)

We provide all-inclusive door-to-door quotes so you know your true landed cost upfront.

Major Air Freight Routes to Australia

Most international air cargo into Australia comes through Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane airports. Perth handles freight from the Middle East and Africa. Adelaide serves South Australian businesses.

From Asia

Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok – these hubs have daily flights to Australia. Transit times typically run 2-4 days door to door. Peak season (September to December) can see delays and higher rates due to capacity constraints.

From Europe

Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London – European cargo typically routes through Asian hubs or comes direct on passenger flights with belly cargo space. Transit times run 4-6 days.

From North America

Los Angeles and San Francisco handle most US-Australia air freight. Direct flights take around 15 hours, with total transit time of 3-5 days door to door.

Domestic Air Freight Within Australia

We also coordinate domestic air freight between Australian cities. Sydney to Perth, Melbourne to Darwin, Brisbane to Hobart – when road freight takes too long, domestic air gets it there overnight.

Domestic air suits urgent deliveries, high-value goods, or shipments to remote locations where road access is limited or slow. Mining equipment parts to remote sites, urgent medical supplies, time-sensitive documents – we handle it daily.

Customs Clearance for Air Freight

Every commercial air freight shipment requires customs clearance before release. Our brokers prepare your import entry, calculate duties and GST, and liaise with the Australian Border Force and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Air freight moves fast. Customs paperwork needs to move faster. We lodge import entries electronically before your cargo lands, so clearance happens quickly once it arrives.

Required Documentation

You’ll need:

  • Commercial invoice (with HS codes, values, Incoterms)
  • Air waybill
  • Packing list
  • Certificates of origin (if claiming FTA duty reductions)
  • Import permits (for restricted goods)

Get these documents right before shipping. Incorrect or missing paperwork means delays – which defeats the purpose of paying for air freight.

Biosecurity Requirements

DAFF inspects certain air freight shipments for biosecurity risks. Timber products, plant materials, food items, and goods in wooden packaging attract extra scrutiny.

During BMSB season (September to April), specific goods from target countries require treatment certificates. We advise on biosecurity requirements before you ship.

  • Documents and samples
  • Mining equipment parts

Each cargo type has specific requirements. Electronics may need anti-static packaging. Pharmaceuticals require careful handling.

We’ve handled it all. We know what’s required.

Comparing Air Freight to Other Options

Air Freight vs Sea Freight

Sea freight costs less but takes longer. For a 100kg shipment from Shanghai to Melbourne, sea freight might cost $200 and take 18 days. Air might cost $800 and take 3 days.

The crossover point depends on your cargo value, urgency, and inventory carrying costs. We can help you calculate which makes sense for your specific situation.

Air Freight vs Express Courier

Express couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS, TNT) offer door-to-door service with integrated customs clearance. They’re excellent for parcels under 70kg.

Beyond that weight, standard air becomes more cost-effective. For a 200kg shipment, express courier rates can be double or triple standard air rates.
