About Port Pirie Port (SeaportCode:AUPPI)

Port Pirie is located in South Australia, about 223km to the north of the state capital Adelaide. The port is tidal, so its water levels are affected by the ebb and flow of the tides. The port started out shipping wool back in 1847, later expanding to tallow and meat. When the railway line heading eastwards was constructed, it began accommodating timber as well.

Near to Port PiriePort is one of the biggest smelters in the world, which is used to melt metal. It’s owned by mining and metals firm Nyrstar. The material processed in the smelter is received through Pirie Port, with the final products being sent on to Australian destinations via road and rail.

Imports and Exports: Sea Freight to Port Pirie Port

Port Pirie exports a large amount of zinc concentrate and lead. Other commodities handled by the port are mineral concentrates, mineral by-products, coal, ores, heavy lift/project cargo, grain and seeds. Stevedoring at Port Pirie is enabled by the various pieces of equipment at the site, for example forklifts, front-end loaders and excavators. Your Port Pirie freight forwarder will organise all aspects of your shipping operation for you, including equipment hire and manpower within the port.

Port Pirie: A BulkPort

Port Pirie exports and imports commodities in bulk, assisted with equipment such as bulk cargo grabs. Bulk is the term used to refer to homogenous unpacked cargo such as coal, iron ore and grain. These commodities would be described as dry bulk. Commodities exported in a liquid form, such as oil and other petroleum-based products, are described as wet bulk or liquid bulk.

Bulk ports require higher levels of infrastructure and underlying investment than ports handling other types of cargo. The logistics also require enhanced managerial operations, especially where export commodities with differential specifications are assembled or blended for outgoing shipments.

Project Cargo: Sea Freight from Port Pirie

Project cargo is any consignment that is loaded individually onto a vessel rather than being transferred within a shipping container. These items are too large or bulky to be entered into a container for shipping. Shipping containers are usually a maximum of 40ft long and 9.5ft tall – and certain items, such as wind turbines, fail to fit inside a space this small so need to be transported as project or breakbulk cargo.

Project cargo shipping deals with the heavyweight stuff. It’s the bulky, heavy, tall items – the huge pieces of machinery, the vehicles and the motor homes. Some examples of this type of consignment are large motorised vehicles, yachts, caravans, heavy plant equipment, agriculture machinery, power generation tools and mining equipment.
