What is Heavy Haulage?
Heavy haulage is transporting large materials, equipment or goods by road. TSL helps companies shift cargo such as car carriers, yachts, earth-moving equipment, pressure vessels, agriculture machinery, and cranes. In the logistics industry, when a regular curtainsider truck is not large or sturdy enough, special lorries are used. These are ultra-strong and have special features that enable them to safely carry larger quantities of stock, and pieces of machinery that are oversize, high or awkward.
Types of Heavy Haulage Cargo
TSL Australia transports a wide variety of heavy cargo including portable buildings, shipping containers, generator units, railway carriages, cranes and dump trucks. Some of our vehicles can be steered from the back – this ensures they move smoothly at high speeds and when turning corners.
Vehicles for Townsville Heavy Transport
Rigid trucks: This type of lorry has at least two (and up to five) axles fitted to the frame. They are used to transport large items across well-maintained roads.
Articulated trucks: These can handle rougher roads and are more flexible due to a pivot joint which allows them to turn more sharply.
Flat-bed trucks: These rigid lorries have flat trailers and are often used for transporting large, bulky items such as concrete pipes or steel girders. Cargo may be contained within blocks or lashed to impede movement during transit.
Side-loaders: This type of truck can be loaded from the side, making it easier when there’s limited space. It means the truck doesn’t have to turn around and doesn’t block the road.
Low-loaders: With two drops in their deck height, these semi-trailers can be used to accommodate taller loads such as heavy equipment such as bulldozers.
Prime movers: These heavy-duty towing engines are designed to haul trailered loads.
For your peace of mind, most of the vehicles we work with have been accredited under the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS).
Equipment Used for Townsville Heavy Haulage
As well as the vehicles themselves, various pieces of equipment may be used to assist in the loading, unloading and transit of your cargo.
Forklifts: We use these small industrial trucks to shift small items – for example boxes containing dry goods – over short distances. We also may use them for loading and unloading goods to and from larger vehicles.
Cranes: When loads cannot be rolled on and off the transportation vehicle, we use cranes to lift them.
Platform/flat-bed trailers: These can be attached to the back of prime movers or articulated trucks to transport loads or equipment. We’ll then often secure the cargo with sheets and/or ropes. Trailers can usually be loaded and unloaded from the sides.
Jinkers and Dollies: These trailer extensions are added to a principle vehicle to distribute the load and maximise weight-lifting capacity. Jinkers are often used for log transportation.
